Beliefs and Religion were a major part of Mesopotamian culture. People took their gods and the people that they worshiped very seriously. The gods were not to be taken lightly.
Major Gods: Ashur: Ashur was worshiped by the people of Assyria. For them, Ashur was in a higher ranking of honor and power. They did everything they could to try and make their god happy. They worshiped him and gave him everything that he wanted. Marduk: Marduk was known to be one of the more well known and well respected Gods. The people of Babylon worshiped Marduk more than any other king. The Babylonians had very similar beliefs to the Sumerians in terms of the Gods that they worshiped and their traditional values. Religion: Mesopotamian people worshiped hundreds of Gods everyday. Each city had it's own special God to watch over them. To the Sumerians, each person had a god of their own, who looked after them. Their own special god talked to other gods on their behalf. Their personal god received a great deal of their worship time and attention. But no one god was more important than another. The Babylonians and Assyrians believed in the majority of the same gods that the Sumerians believed in, with an addition of their own gods added to them. However, unlike the Sumerians, they believed that one god was more powerful than another. They ranked their gods as opposed to looking at all of them as equal. Even though this was the case, they still valued their gods very much and religion always remained an important part of their daily lives. |
